Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) 2014 champion Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) ended the season on a high by completing grand double after winning the TNB Cup after beating defending champion Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club in an exciting final that went the full distance.
THT under the guidance of coach Sarjit Singh who is a former International, claimed the TNB Cup after beating KLHC 2-1 after penalty shootout at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here.
Both teams were tied 3-3 after regulation time.
With the win, THT took home RM70,000 cash while KLHC received RM50,000.
Apart from the grand double, THT also had three other reasons to celebrate today when brothers Mohd Fitri and Faizal Saari were voted Man-of-the-Match and top scorer (17 goals) respectively while Mohd Hafizuddin Othman was chosen as the Best Goalkeeper.
When the action started today, THT needed only six minutes to take the lead when Faizal tucked away a penalty corner before Mohd Fitri added the second three minutes later but Faizal made it a pleasant family affair by adding the third in the 31st minute.
After the break, it was KLHC’s turn to take centre stage as coach Muhammad Dhaarma Raj Abdullah’s pep-talk during half time seemed to have a great impact on the game as KLHC players were more coordinated.
National penalty corner specialist Muhammad Razie Abdul Rahim reduced the deficit with a brace in the 51st and 55th minutes before Mohd Syamim Yusof levelled the tie with a 59th minute strike.
However, THT goalkeeper Mohd Hafizuddin became the hero when he saved KLHC’s Pakistani import Waseem Ahmad’s penalty stroke.
TNB finished third after beating Maybank 4-2 after a penalty shootout since both teams were tied 1-1 after full time.
